Black Gram or Urad is grown in the uplands of Uttaranchal at an altitude of 1000-1500m above sea level. It is commonly cultivated for pulse and various preparations of Urad have ritualistic significance in Uttaranchal. ‘Bada’ made of this pulse are obligatory in every auspicious ceremony and festival of the State.
